Switches

( 01 Feb 2007 )

A 32 x 16 video crosspoint switch from Intersil Corp. integrates a DC-restore clamp on each video input to eliminate blacklevel fluctuation, providing correctly balanced composite video with fewer external components. The ISL59534's integrated DC-restore clamp biases composite (NTSC and PAL) video by automatically adjusting the DC level of the most negative portion of the video to the reference voltage. This feature can be disabled by the user through an SPI/QSPITM compatible, three-wire serial interface for S-video and component video applications.

The device operates from a single +5V supply, and it can accommodate voltages from 0 to 3.5V at the inputs and 0 to 4V at the outputs. It also has an input clamp with external group reference that can be used for ACcoupled applications.

Any of the ISL59534's outputs can be switched to any of the 32 input video signal sources. The device also features a broadcast mode—with 90MHz of bandwidth—in which any single input can be simultaneously sent to all 16 outputs. Outputs can be individually programmed to high impedance and a gain of +1 or +2 for flexibility.

The switch features a -3dB signal bandwidth of 320MHz. The device has a differential gain and differential phase of 0.025 percent and 0.222° and 0.1dB flatness out to 50MHz to support increasingly higher video resolutions and to provide desirable isolation for less leakage between video channels. The ISL59534 in a 356-lead BGA package is priced at $65 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Analog Devices' 32 x 32 analog crosspoint switches—AD8117/ AD8118—achieve bandwidth of >500MHz to route quantum extended graphics array (QXGA) video signals without degrading image quality. QXGA (2,048 x 1,536 pixels) enables very fine detail video images in LCD monitors.

The devices use what is said to be the industry's first fully differential analog crosspoint core architecture. This design enables any combination of differential or single-ended inputs and outputs. Desirable image fidelity is accomplished with bandwidth of 500MHz, slew rate of 1,800V/ µsec, gain flatness of 0.1dB out to 100MHz, and crosstalk of -40dB at 500MHz.

The AD8117 and AD8118 consume 2.5mW per point; operate with a single +5V supply or dual ±2.5V supplies to eliminate the need for external heat sinks; and consume 200mA of standby current and 500mA quiescent.

The analog crosspoint switches can be easily programmed and reprogrammed. Channel switching is performed via a double-buffered, serial digital control—which can accommodate daisy chaining of several devices—or through a parallel control that allows updating of individual outputs without reprogramming the entire array. Both switches in 304-ball BGA packages are priced at $295 in 100-piece quantities.
