Switched mode power supplies were first use during the time when valve or tube car radios needed the large HT supply to be generated from an automobile power system of nominally 12V DC. While more reliable, efficient and durable than those of the past, today’s switched mode power supply is basically the sames with the exception of the replacement with solid state electronics of the electro-mechanical component that ‘broke down’ the 12V DC supply.
This month, we showcase a recently introduced compact SMPS, as well as a pair of MOSFETs that are used in the design of switched mode power supplies.
OMRON Europe
At 22.5 mm wide, Omron’s S8VS Micro series is a supercompact model designed for users who need a suitable power supply for their down-sized machines. Inside the unit are discrete components mounted on a metal-frame circuit board that enables the 30W model to provide a higher power density per cm3 than similar power supplies. Because there is very little heat dissipation, no conventional heat sinks are required.
The S8VS also features a DC Low indicator (orange) and DC On indicator (green). Because the unit conforms to conventional standards (VDE, CE, cULus), as well as to EMI Class B, IP20, UL Class 2 and Class1/Division 2, it can be used in equipment anywhere in the world.
Omron’s policy of environmental awarness is reflected in these products. The soldering in all of the S8VS Micro models is lead-free.

Fairchild Semiconductor
Fairchild’s 600V SuperFET MOSFET is the company’s line of high voltage MOSFETs offering low onresistance and low gate charge performance. They are designed to help reduce system power loss and increase efficiency and reliability in SMPS and Power Factor Correction applications. According to the company, the proprietary SuperFET technology implements a compensation region using a multi epitaxy layer to improve on resistance. The devices feature low Figure of Merit (FOM = RDS(on) 3 Qgd).
The FCP11N60 and FCPF11N60 are said to provide best-in-class di/dt (1430 A/us, max) resulting from the devices wide body-diode profile to ensure increased ruggedness, ultra-low RDSC(on) (32 Ω, typ) and low output capacitance (Coss=35 pF, typ).
The new MOSFETs are available in TO-220 and TO-220F packaging, respectively. This lead-free (Pb-free) product meets or exceeds the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and is compliant with the European Union requirements.
