NXP launches smallest, highly integrated FM-RDS stereo radio IC

( 01 May 2008 )

NXP Semiconductors has launched the TEA5990, which is said to be the world’s smallest highly-integrated FM stereo radio IC with R(B)DS functionality. The follow-on to the TEA5760 and TEA5766, the new FM-RDS chip sets a new standard in radio performance, with better channel separation, best-in-class sensitivity, very high selectivity and clear sound. Using a command-based interface to simplify software development, the TEA5990 make system integration easy and quick to enable OEMs to drive higher attach rates for FM radio in portable devices.

The FM radio IC, available in a 4x4x1mm HVQFN24 or 2.56x2.56x0.6mm WL-CSP package, allows OEMs to implement a complete radio solution without external components, requiring less than 15mm2 of board space. The device also enables quick integration and flexible design-ins by supporting the I2C-bus and the SPI-bus (three- or four-wire format), while a digitally controlled algorithm facilitates seamless coexistence with GSM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and WiMAX. The TEA5990 also offers better reception quality over a wide tuning range (70MHz to 108MHz, including the 70MHz China band) and uses a tuning grid of 50 kHz, 100 kHz, and 200kHz. It has Stereo Noise Canceling (SNC) as well as built-in Auto Search and Store for up to 32 channels with dynamic adjacent channel suppression.

Other key specifications include single-ended antenna input optimized for headphone wire, <21mA current consumption (typical); 55dB channel separation; 60dB SNR (mono type); 1.4μVEMF FM sensitivity (at 26dB SNR); 14μVEMF RDS sensitivity; 0.2 percent Audio THD (mono); 2.7V to 3.6V supply voltage; and 32.768kHz reference clock frequency.
