Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions (TAOS) has announced a dual-source agreement for ambient light sensors with Avago Technologies. The companies will work for growing demand for second sourcing of ambient light sensors used in high-volume display applications, such as cell phones, computer monitors and LCD displays. According to the terms of the agreement, the two companies will provide a dual source for a family of ambient light sensors which combine the TAOS light sensing circuit design technology with Avago’s packaging technology. Dual sourcing will benefit this growing high-volume market because the products will come from completely independent supply chains, from the wafer processing to the final testing of the product. The dual-source device resulting from this agreement is TAOS part number TSL2563CL or Avago part number APDS-9300. This is a Digital Ambient Light Sensor with I2C interface packaged in a 6-pin ChipLED surface mount package measuring 2.6 mm by 2.2 mm and is well-suited for use in LCD monitors, flat-panel televisions and cell phones. Each company will sell the devices independently with its own part number and its own pricing.
