Taiwan-based Chi Mei Optoelectronics announced that it would put on “indefinite hold” plans to build an LCD module assembly plant in Hanoi, Vietnam (scheduled for 2010).
“While not significant to the LCD space in terms of units or capacity… we believe it is a result of reduced panel demand that is currently working its way through the panel chain. We view these developments in a somewhat positive light, as a more conservative approach to capex would be the next step in any rationalizing moves by the panel producers,” said Andy Abrams, LCD/display analyst at Avian Securities.
