Fairchild Introduces Voltage Translator for I2C Applications

(Product News, 29 Aug 2008 )

Fairchild Semiconductor has provided designers with an Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) voltage translator that operates over a voltage range (1.65V to 5.5V) to accommodate the needs of I2C and low-voltage applications. The FXM2IC102’s I2C interface and open drain output offers designers a simple way to interface with Bluetooth and display screens in cell phones, notebooks and other applications. With the I2C interface, only two lines (clock and data) are required for full duplexed communication. To save space in these applications, the translator is packaged in compact 1.6mm x 1.6mm MicroPak packaging.

The FXM2IC102 also features an output drive specification and ESD protection. Dynamic output drive allows the FXM2IC102 to quickly drive highly capacitive loads (as high as 400pF) that are often found in I2C applications such as cell phones, notebooks, portable GPSs and cameras. Its strong ESD protection (15kV on I/O pins) allows it to be placed close to the external environment without the risk of damage from an ESD event. The FXM2IC102 is part of a broad portfolio of application-specific logic translators. This includes the 4-bit, low voltage, dual supply voltage translator with independent-direction controls, the only single-bit, bi-directional voltage translator with guaranteed performance down to 1.1V and the dual-supply, bi-directional translator with independent-direction controls. The FXM2IC102 utilizes lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and has been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. All of Fairchild's products are designed to meet the requirements of the European Union's Directive on the restriction of the use of certain substances (RoHS).
